Religion is a tricky area to be experimented with, especially if you are looking to base your story on it. However, in the past, several film directors have made films which dealt with the theme of religion. Some even got embroiled in various controversies but still ended up as huge hits at the box office.

1. 'Dharam Sankat Mein'
The upcoming film tells the story of a Hindu man, Dharampal (Paresh Rawal) who goes through an identity crisis, after he discovers that he was adopted and his biological parents are Muslim.
2. 'OMG: Oh My God'
A merchant (Paresh Rawal) decides to sue God after his antique shop is destroyed in an earthquake and the insurance company denies his claim. The satirical comedy drama was based on a Gujarati play 'Kanji Viruddh Kanji'. The film was a huge hit and even bagged a National Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2012.
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film was a story about an alien played by Aamir Khan who comes to earth on a mission, befriends a TV journalist (Anushka Sharma) and questions various religious dogmas and superstitions. The satire comedy emerged as the highest grossing Indian film of all time.
'Dharm' was the tale of a highly revered and learned Brahmin priest (Pankaj Kapoor), who learns that his adopted child is a Muslim and how he realizes in the end, that true religion is humanity. The film, directed by Bhavna Talwar, was premiered at the 60th Cannes Film Festival.
