7 Highlights of Kalki Koechlin's 'Margarita With A Straw'

Kalki Koechlin's 'Margarita With A Straw' is all set to hit the theatrical screens on 17th April. The film, directed by Shonali Bose has been creating a lot of buzz among the viewers.

So before the film's release, we bring to you 7 highlights that makes it a must-watch.

1. The film is about a rebellious young woman, Laila with cerebral palsy (Kalki Koechlin) who goes to New York for pursuing her studies. There, she unexpectedly falls in love and embarks on a self-discovery journey.

2. Very few films have been made in India on cerebral palsy. 'Margarita With A Straw' is one of them. Previously, director Mani Ratnam had made a Tamil film 'Anjali' on a similar subject way back in 1990. The movie was later dubbed in Hindi and Telugu.

3. Kalki Koechlin underwent a lot of workshops to get into the skin of her character. In fact, in one of her interviews she revealed, "I was training for six months before shooting the film as I had to get the body language right. I wanted to get every aspect of it right. I did a six-week workshop with Adil Hussain. We tried putting marbles in my mouth for the speech part. It was a long process. During the two months of shooting I stayed in my character completely."

4. The film is inspired by the real life story of director Shonali Bose's cousin, Malini Chib who too suffers from cerebral palsy.

5. Kalki Koechlin has done a nude scene. The film also features a kissing scene between Kalki and her lesbian lover played by Sayani Gupta. For a change, the censor board has passed this film with only one cut.

6. 'Margarita With A Straw' has won several awards and accolades at various film festivals. It bagged the NETPAC award (World) at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, the Audience Award and the Young Jury Award at the Vesoul Film Festival in France this year. Kalki won the Best Actress Award at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival held in Estonia in 2014.

7. Several B-town celebs who have watched this film, have praised immensely the moving tale. Among them is Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Rajkumar Hirani, Shraddha Kapoor, Anurag Kashyap, Kiran Rao, Richa Chadda, Gulshan Devaiah and others.
