Piku, Devdas, Barfi; 8 Bollywood films with a Bong connection

Shoojit Sircar's 'Piku' is one of the most awaited films of this year. The film revolves around a quirky father-daughter relationship, essayed by Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone. It is a known fact that, they play a Bengali family, in the film.


However, this is not the first time that, Bollywood had a tryst with Bengali characters. We bring to you 8 Bollywood films with a Bong connection. Tell us which is your favourite one.


1. 'Devdas'

This film is an adaptation of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Bengali novel with the same name. Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan), a wealthy law graduate, returns after completing his studies from London, to marry his childhood sweetheart, Paro (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan). However, the rejection of this marriage, by his own family, sparks his descent into alcohol, ultimately leading to his emotional deterioration.


2. 'Parineeta'

The film is an adaptation of the Bengali novel, 'Parineeta', written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. It tells the story of a lifelong romance between Lolita (Vidya Balan) and Shekar (Saif Ali Khan) which is upset by the arrival of another man, Girish (Sanjay Dutt).


3. 'Barfi'

Set in 1960's, 'Barfi' depicts the story of deaf and mute man, Murphy 'Barfi' Johnson (Ranbir Kapoor) and his relationship with Shruti (Ileana D'cruz) and autistic, Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra). Ileana donned a Bengali avatar for the film.


4. 'Kahaani'

A pregnant woman's search for her missing husband brings her from London to Kolkata during the festival of Durga Puja. But everyone she questions, denies having ever met her husband. Vidya Balan played the role of Vidya Bagchi.


5. 'Vicky Donor'

The film was a tale of a sperm donor, Vicky Arora (Ayushmann Khurana). Yami Gautam played the role of a Bengali girl named Ashima Roy.


6. 'Lootera'

Set in the 1950's era in Bengal, an aristocrat's daughter, Pakhi Roy Chaudhary (Sonakshi Sinha) falls in love with a visiting archaeologist, Varun Shrivastav (Ranveer Singh) but, he holds a secret that could drive them apart. The film was partly inspired by O.Henry's 'The Last Leaf'.


7. 'Gunday'

Two childhood friends, Bikram and Bala (Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor) travel from Bangladesh to Calcutta during the turbulent 1970s who later become powerful goons. They both, fall for a cabaret dancer, Nandita Sengupta (Priyanka Chopra).


8. 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy'

This upcoming film is directed by Dibakar Banerjee. It is a murder mystery, set in the backdrop of Calcutta, in 1940s. Sushant Singh Rajput plays the role of the fictional detective, Byomkesh Bakshy, which was originally created by the Bengali writer, Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay.
