A.R.Rahman: The Music Maestro

A.R.Rahman: The Music Maestro

6th Jaunuary, 1967- the day when music-maestro Allah-Rakha Rahman, or as we fondly call him A.R Rahman, was born.

The man whose music has always been refreshing and different. The man who has made India proud all around the world. He does not create music to make it a chart-topping album/song but music that goes well with the movie and suits the theme and the ambiance.

Today on his birthday, we bring to you the Hindi-movie albums which wouldn't have been the same had they not been composed by this Oscar-winning Music Composer. Also, refresh your A.R Rahman memories as we even include the best song out of the entire album!

1. Roja:

'Yeh Haseen Waadiyan', 'Roja Jaaneman', 'Bharat Humko Jaan Se Pyaara Hai' and 'Choti Si Asha' were the first time A.R Rahman had composed music for a film. And not only did he win several awards including the National Award, these songs still remain fresh in our heads. Such is his magic.

2. Rangeela:

This movie was a colourful one along with amazing performances by Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar and Jackie Shroff. But what added melody to this movie was the hit music by A.R Rahman. He made the entire nation dance to 'Rangeela Re' and made people adore Aamir even more with 'Yaaro Sun Lo Zara'. Who can forget the sensuous 'Tanha Tanha' that made Urmila a national sensation!

3. Dil Se..:

This was one intense yet romantic album. As we said, Rahman captures the ambience of the place where the video of the song is located. We wonder if 'Dil Se Re' would have been that amazing had it lacked the Kashmiri-touch to it; or had the dancing-on-train-roof sequence been noticed this much if 'Chaiyya Chaiyya' would have been a mediocre song and not a peppy one.

4. Taal:

Refreshing, beautiful and magical. The entire nation had been humming the songs of 'Taal'. Those melodious tracks along with brilliant visuals and the beautiful Aishwarya Rai made 'Taal' one of the biggest movies of the year! You would still hear radio channels playing 'Ishq Bina' every monsoon.

5. Lagaan:

One of the very rare albums where neither the songs were peppy nor dance numbers yet ended up becoming the biggest hits of the year. But A.R. Rahman's fine composition along with Javed Akhtar's touching and realistic lyrics made 'Lagaan' not only a brilliant movie but also a musical saga.

6. Saathiya:

A.R Rahman re-defined young romance with his beautiful compositions in 'Saathiya'. While the whole nation had their foot tapping to the beats of 'O Humdum Soniyo Re', 'Chalka Chalka Re' became a favorite wedding song. Romantic souls still have the melodious 'Saathiya' sung by Sonu Nigam in their mobile's playlist.

7. Rang De Basanti:

And once again A.R Rahman had captured the country's young as well as old crowd. His composition in the movie made us dance on the rebellious tunes of 'Paathshala' and 'Khalbali' and made us cry when the emotional 'Lukka Chupi' and 'Khoon Chalaa' played. Well, who can forget Daler Mehendi's 'Rang De Basanti'?! And yes, the very inspiring and youth-based 'Rubaru'

8. Jodha-Akhbar:

It takes a great effort to compose the music and background music for a periodic drama. And Rahman did that with perfection. The music had a mix of Sufism and Rajasthani folk. Most of the songs in the album were romantic but 'Azeem-O-Shan Shahenshah' was lavish and larger-than-life.

In fact, the entire album and the background score was larger-than-life. Surely, your heartbeat thumped faster during the battle scenes and during the intense ones. If music keeps

the audience entertained, the background music creates the mood of every scene and makes it worth watching!

9. Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na:

Music worth falling for! It re-defined college romance and friendship. Haven't you sung 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi' in your college days? Or didn't you dance on 'Pappu Can't Dance Saala' at the party last week? And we are sure 'Kahin Toh' reminds of you that special someone every time you hear it.

10. Rockstar:

Mohit Chauhan's entry to stardom. Ranbir Kapoor's venture to intense roles. Rockstar had the “A.R. Rahman Touch” written all over it. Based on the life of a musician, the movie had to have some amazing, unconventional and foot-tapping songs. Songs we still hum. Be it 'Sadda Haq', 'Kun Faya Kun' or 'Tum Ho', these songs had become an instant hit and are still fresh.

11. SPECIAL MENTIONS-'Jai Ho':

The list would be incomplete if we do not include this song! The song which describes the life and hardships of the protagonist in 'Slumdog Millionaire'. The song which made A.R Rahman bag the Academy Award.

While the previous year hadn't been a big year for Rahman except 'Highway', we are hoping he continues his magical touch this year too with both, Bollywood and Hollywood projects lined up for releases.

Wishing him a very Happy Birthday and lots of success.
