For the past few years, it has been a trend to release films during the festive weekend as it leads to higher business. Be it Salman Khan's 'Kick' that released on Eid, Shah Rukh Khan's 'Happy New Year' on Diwali or Hrithik Roshan's 'Bang Bang' and Shahid Kapoor's 'Haider' on Gandhi Jayanti. The actors have been reserving the holidays and extended weekends to ensure good business for the film.
Ask Ajay Devgn about this trend and he says, “I will tell you honestly, what is happening is that if everybody is booked it doesn't matter because the situation is like this that everyone wants a festival release since the business during that time is very good. So by next year or a year after that, two films will release together and nobody will be able to book. This monopoly isn't good for the industry. It is just not right that one decides and books a date.
He elaborates further, “That is what happened with 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' and 'Son of Sardar'. Both had their own space and they did very well. Recently also two films clashed - 'Bang Bang' and 'Haider' but both did very well. So, if this continues then people will release two films together because they aren't left with any choice.â€
Considering the number of films releasing every week, we probe Ajay further, whether the box-office has become competitive these days and he concludes, “Yes, I think so. The problem is that every week there is a release. You have to have a big opening or a long run, like we (Action Jackson) have two weeks which is good enough. Others have just a week. But again we don't have a holiday. Holiday makes a lot of difference. It gets covered up in the longer run.â€
'Action Jackson' starring Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha, Yami Gautam, Manasvi Mamgai is all set to release on December 5, 2014.
