American Sniper Review: Nothing Great, But Bradley Cooper Shines

Movie: American Sniper

Star Cast: Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, Luke Grimes, Kyle Gallner, Sam Jaeger, Jake McDorman and Cory Hardrict

Director: Clint Eastwood

Claps for: Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller's performances, the sandstorm fight scene

Slaps for: Pretty much everything else!

Popcorn Refill: During the interval

Story: Based on Chris Kyle's autobiography American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname “Legend.” However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. He is also facing a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world. Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the spirit of the SEAL creed to “leave no one behind.” But upon returning to his wife, Taya Renae Kyle (Sienna Miller) and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind.

Performances: Bradley Cooper stars as Chris Kyle and features in an intense, unglamorous avatar, very different from his usual self. He does seem a bit odd at times, which probably is due to the situations his character finds himself in. Would give him the benefit of the doubt there! He moves away from his usual fare and manages to get the role right. Oscar worthy? I don't think so though! Sienna Miller also does a good job as Kyle's wife and is convincing as the wife who worries about her husband's bloodlust as he yearns to get back to the battlefield everytime he is home. The rest of the supporting cast don't have much screen time and there is no standout character from the lot.

Direction: 84-year old veteran actor-director Clint Eastwood helms this biopic and could have definitely done a better job. He puts the spotlight mainly on Kyle's Iraqi forays and his single-minded determination to protect his fellow countrymen. He is portrayed as almost superhuman with little emotions and seems to have a healthy appetite for killing! He handles himself well for someone whose first two kills were a boy and his mother carrying an anti-tank grenade. His treatment of Iraqis as 'savages' didn't leave a good taste though! Eastwood has tried to be jingoistic and show full-blooded American patriotism. There is little emphasis on Chris Kyle's life after retirement and the events that led to his subsequent death.

Combo on offer: Bradley Cooper and some intense action scenes. Nothing great about the movie though!

Final Verdict: It would be Slaps overall for the film with the Claps reserved only for Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller.
