Anupam Kher: Akshay Kumar is unbelievable in 'Baby'

Actor Anupam Kher is one person who can bowl you over with his wit and charm. Kher, who has been a part of Bollywood for more than three decades now and has done over 500 films, settles down for a chat ahead of his next film's release. He talks about the changing trend of Bollywood, 'Baby', working with Neeraj Pandey and more! Excerpts:

You have always been part of Neeraj Pandey's films. What attracts you to his movies?

He gave me a script to read and I was completely bowled over it. Even this script is really amazing. Why this film is more important because it deals with an issue like terrorism and also provides solution to it. You have to be a visionary to be able to do such a film and execute it.

Are you also part of Neeraj's next film, a biopic on Mahendra Singh Dhoni?

I am not doing Dhoni's role (laughs). Jokes apart, he hasn't offered me a role yet but I am looking forward and hoping to work again.

How has been your experience of working with Neeraj?

I am very happy to be associated with Neeraj. I wanted something like this with Dibakar Bannerjee also because we again did a film like 'Khosla Ka Ghosla' at a time when nobody believed in him. But sometimes people want to work with different people. Neeraj isn't like that. He loves to work with the same people again. Yes, there have been times when I worked only for Karan Johar, Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai and that is also because I had a comfort level with certain people. Same is the case with Neeraj. He makes the kind of cinema which is relevant in today's times. It is a very proud moment to be a part of superior cinema.

How has Neeraj's style of working changed from 'A Wednesday' to now 'Baby'?

His working style is the same. He is a hard task master and does not believe in changing on the sets. His script is his film. In fact, if you have read the script, you know the film. I don't think much editing takes place on the set. The camera is continuously moving. I saw some action sequences from the film and Akshay is unbelievable in 'Baby'. Especially for an actor who has done so much of work for past 19 years, it is good to come up with something different.

What matters to you the most while you are choosing a film?

I enjoy doing good roles and the company of people I am working with. I don't take myself seriously as a person or an actor. You just have to do your job well. Sometimes, I have done Yashji's films only to be on the sets. I did a guest appearance in Shah Rukh's film because I like him. I did 'Dabangg' because I felt like doing it. I have started reading the script of 'Jazbaa' today. It is not some extra ordinary role but I haven't worked with Sanjay Gupta since a long time so I thought let me do the film. Also, Ash is working in it so why not?

Your role in 'Daawat-E-Ishq' was brilliant. What according to you was the reason for film's failure?

I have no idea why 'Daawat-E-Ishq' didn't work. It is very difficult to understand that. But the film has given me a good friend in Aditya Roy Kapur.

You are one actor who has never shied away from playing roles older than your age. Do you think today's actors are afraid of it?

Actors are afraid and not capable to play older characters. If I hadn't played an older character in my first film 'Saaransh' 30 years ago, I would not have been talking to you. But apart from playing an old man in my first film, I didn't have any choice. I was on the streets looking for work, there was no house, nothing to eat and I got such a great role. And I am from theatre and I thought main isme kamal kar dunga!

How did you prepare for your role in 'Baby'?

Everything was in the script. We didn't have to, thank god, play with the machines. Personally, I am quite tech savvy but not like Shuklajiin the film. He is a genius. I just look genius! Basically, I make all my roles difficult and then only I can give my best. I start from scratch. And hence there is a sense of believability in my character. Competence is the biggest enemy of brilliance! Whether I am doing 'Baby' or 'Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo' it has to be done from scratch.

Do you agree to Akshay when he says that Bollywood lacks unity?

With reference to what he was saying, I agree to him. In comparison to Hollywood, I think we don't applaud each other. Actors in Bollywood should be relaxed. Without naming or pointing fingers at anyone, in lot of cases people have got success without deserving it. In today's times, I just feel that everyone is so lonely. But somewhat technology can be blamed for it. It has taken away from us the joy of interacting. Look at the kind of friendship Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Amitabh Bachchan or Vinod Khanna shared. But now we have become more wary of others. We are like animals in a jungle!

Is the 'Special 26' sequel on the cards anytime soon?

I would love to make 'Special 26' sequel because now we (Akshay Kumar and Anupam Kher) can be anywhere - we can be in Dubai or UK or America. It was a very cheeky film. In 'Baby', Akshay and I don't get along well.

Your talk show 'The Anupam Kher Show: Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai' was a hit. Any plans to start its second season?

I am starting that talk show once again. We will begin in April 2015.
