While Salman Khan made his share of efforts to bring down the wars that fans indulge in on Twitter, all his efforts went into vain yesterday with the official announcement of his upcoming Yash Raj Film ‘Sultan’. Why? Because the movie releases on Eid 2016, the same day when his friend Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Raees’ is slated for a big release. And boy, fans of both the superstars jumped in trying to prove who the bigger star is, and who would win the battle next year!
While they are busy fighting, we bring to you some of the biggest box-office clashes that had both, the industry and the fans divided into two halves.
‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ vs ‘Lagaan’:
While both the movies were equally patriotic and super-hits in their own ways, it was Sunny Deol’s ‘Gadar’ that smashed all the box office records and created a huge stir, thanks to its entertaining factor and chartbuster songs! The movie went on to become one of the biggest hits of India ever, while Aamir Khan’s ‘Lagaan’ was India’s Official Entry to the prestigious Academy Awards.
‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ vs ‘Bade Miya Chote Miya’:
It was a team of the masters in the game vs a team of new challengers! While ‘Bade Miya Chote Miya’ had megastars Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda in a typical David Dhawan comedy-drama, which was bound to be a box-office hit; the other side had the next-emerging superstar Shah Rukh Khan along with Kajol and Rani Mukherjee in debutante director Karan Johar’s romantic-drama ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’. Surprisingly, both the movies fared amazingly well at the box office with SRK’s movie standing first and Big B’s flick second!
‘Mohabbatein’ vs ‘Mission Kashmir’:
It was a win-or-die situation for both Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan as the two starred together in the movie ‘Mohabbatein’ which was up for a grand release against Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt’s ‘Mission Kashmir’. While SRK had to prove his worth over the newcomer Hrithik, who had been stealing Khan’s thunder off late; Big B had to make sure he stays in the industry after a low career phase and the movie was his only chance. And as fate would have it, the two superstars managed to outdo the young sensation, even though ‘Mission Kashmir’ too ended up having good collections at the box office!
‘Don’ vs ‘Jaan-E-Mann’:
The first time the two warring Khans of Bollywood had to complete with each other on the same day. While SRK was going through the best phase of his career, even the power of Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Priety Zinta together couldn’t save the movie from drowning. ‘Don’ was a smash hit!
‘Om Shanti Om’ vs ‘Saawariya’:
Ever witnessed a thunder storm that takes away everything from you? Well, the entire team of ‘Saawariya’ surely did. Even though the movie gave us Ranbir Kapoor, one cannot deny how brilliantly terrible it was. And having a completely entertaining drama flick with SRK starring in it, there was no chance ‘Saawariya’ could have survived the ‘Om Shanti Om’ storm.
‘Veer-Zaara’ vs ‘Aitraaz’:
Yash Chopra was back with another trademark Yash Raj romance starring the King of Romance Shah Rukh Khan with melodious songs. Nothing could go wrong. Plus, with ‘Aitraaz’ having an adult content, the movie had to be content with limited audiences. It was a clear win-win situation for the romantic classic ‘Veer-Zaara’.
‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ vs ‘Son of Sardar’:
This clash divided the industry into two halves, as the fight started as a mere box-office number game but soon turned into a personal conflict between Ajay Devgan and ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ team. Ajay Devgn was asked to prepone/postpone his movie in order to pay tribute to legendary film maker Yash Chopra (as ‘JTHJ’ was the last movie he directed before his death) but he chose to release it on the same day, fought for number of screens and even roped in Shah Rukh Khan’s then-arch-rival Salman Khan to do a special song for the movie in order to attract more footsteps into the cinema hall for his flick. However, it earned him a lot of criticism. And on Diwali, the audiences gave its verdict declaring ‘JTHJ’ to be better than ‘SOS’.
‘Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na’ vs ‘Love Story 2050’:
It was a clash of two newcomers, but surely a big one! While Harman Baweja had charmed everyone with his dance moves and his debut flick too looked brilliant with all the special effects; Imran Khan’s college-romance debut film was being promoted by his “mamu jaan” Aamir Khan. End result- We all know which movie is considered a cult and which one is laughed at! However, the faith of both the promising newcomers in the industry has not been much of a great one to tell.
‘Haider’ vs ‘Bang Bang!’:
Things were really not looking good for Shahid Kapur on a professional front. After a spate of flops, his only box-office hit was criticized for being a very common action-masala genre; and his juniors in the industry were speeding way ahead of him. The only last chance to make sure he stays- Vishal Bharadwaj’s ‘Haider’. Enter ‘Bang Bang!’ starring two hotties of B-town Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif performing never-seen-before action flicks, locking lips, dancing on chartbusting movies, wearing glamorous clothes and doing every other thing that would make sure the movie grosses 100 Crores at the box office. While ‘Bang Bang!’ looked way too promising, it was ‘Haider’ that emerged as the dark-horse and got away with all the accolades and awards.
And now we have ‘Dilwale’, which is being touted as the biggest release of the year, clashing with ‘Bajirao Mastani’. We wonder if Sanjay Leela Bhansali remembers anything about what happened in 2007 when he released his ‘Saawariya’ against an SRK entertainer! Plus, given SRK’s strike rate during clashes, even Salman might have to think twice.
