It’s not every time that the hero wins in the climax and lives happily ever after with his lady love. There have been movies which dared to be different and had a different ending where the hero/heroine dies! So lets us have a look at some of those on-screen deaths that left us with tears in our eyes and made us wish if we could change the ending.
1. Randeep Hooda - Highway:
Randeep’s Mahabir was the silent, intense and brooding man with a bad past. He won hearts as the man with principles who could have easily done anything with Veera, but stood true to his aim of just kidnapping her, without getting any wrong intentions in his mind! His change of heart and the smile on his face lighted up the screen; he was not the usual romantic hero but still came across as that man any woman would love to be with! However, his death was a shocking one and left all with mouth wide open!
2. Tabu - Haider:
The mother who was true to her son and her husband but was doubted by all! A women who found happiness in little things of life, in her son’s happiness but was betrayed by all. The role of Ghazala Meer was like any other mother caught in a serious turmoil. It was indeed a teary scene to see the loving mother sacrifice her life for her son, and to stop her son from becoming a terrorist.
3. Ajay Devgn - Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai:
Sultan Mirza is still remembered as one of the most iconic characters of Hindi Cinema, and Ajay Devgn stepped into the shoes and made this role larger-than-life! His portrayal as the dark yet good-hearted gangster was loved by all; and after showing his journey to the road of success from childhood to the start of his political career, his death came as a sudden shock and left all speechless! This role not only proved why Ajay Devgn is one the best actors of the industry, but also gave us a whole new outlook to the mafia movies made in Bollywood!
4. Emraan Hashmi - Jannat:
Though Emraan Hashmi has a penchant of dying on-screen nearly every time, his deaths in ‘Awarapan’ and ‘Jannat’ left all with teary eyes! But if we had to choose any one between the two, we would surely go for the death of the cricket bookie Arjun! Emraan played the role of the man who will do anything to keep himself happy and achieve all that he wants, even if it means doing business for a Don. But between this ambitious and lust for money, we all fell for Arjun’s daring, his one-liners, his love for Zoya and the bright future he wanted to give to his child. And the death scene got even more painful to watch as Hashmi went down to pick up the engagement ring but got shot by the police men several times as they thought he is reaching out for a gun! Truly, Emraan knows how to make the audience sad with all his deaths on-screen!
5. Amitabh Bachchan – Paa:
Not that we didn’t cry when he died as the best friend any Veeru could get, but the senior actor took his acting skills to a totally different and higher level with ‘Paa’ where he played the lovable and goofy child Auro suffering from progeria. Well, even though the movie’s story line demanded Auro to die, his concern for his mother and love for his father moved all into tears during his last few breaths. With this movie, Big B proved once again why he is the Shahenshah of Bollywood!’
6. Shah Rukh Khan - Kal Ho Na Ho:
Remember the impact he left on all when he died in ‘Darr’ and ‘Baazigar’? Well, when an actor can bring tears into your eyes upon his death even after playing a negative role, imagine what would happen when he dies after playing a large-hearted, full of life and jovial man who is destined to die due to a heart disease and make sure to unite two souls before he departs! Yes, you knew you had tears in your eyes in nearly every scene where SRK flares up his nostrils, shows his dimpled cheeks with tears in his eyes looking up at the sky with the ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ tune playing...No one could have played Aman better than King Khan!
7. Asin - Ghajini:
One of the most brutal on-screen deaths in recent times! It was not just Aamir but we all wanted to get up from our seats, get into the movie and save Kalpana from getting killed mercilessly! Yes, her death left us all shattered, wanting Aamir’s Sanjay Singhania to take this revenge as soon as possible and kill Ghajini the same way he killed Kaplana!
8. Akshay Kumar - Khakee:
We have seen heroes die in love, but here was a scenario where the hero died due to the betrayal from the one he loves! Yes, this scene made us hate Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to the core for betraying Akshay, and killing him with several bullets at him from all way round!
9. Hrithik Roshan - Fiza:
The innocent man who lived a normal life with his mother and sister but is kidnapped by a terrorist organization and is trained and brain-washed in such a way that coming back into his normal life becomes suffocating. It was after a long time that the audiences could relate to the pain of a changed man, who has taken up the road of killing people and cried when his own sister (played by Karishma Kapoor) kills him. Plus, given the impact Hrithik had left on the audiences with his debut film, his death scene in this movie left all in a shocked state.
10. Kareena Kapoor Khan - Agent Vinod:
She played the sexy and glamorous RAW agent who could charm any man. But beneath this tough woman with strong intentions was a girl who once had dreams like that of any other girl. Perhaps it was that strong emotional connect which left all teary eyed with her death in ‘Agent Vinod’- a movie which was, otherwise, a bore to watch!
11. Aditya Roy Kapur - Aashiqui 2:
A man’s journey from being the most successful singer to a drunkard who isn’t valued by the media and the public anymore is touching. But it gets even more touching when he makes it his life’s goal to make the love of his life a singing sensation, something which he achieved but lost soon! So much so, that when his drinking habits become an obstacle between her and her singing career, he decided to sacrifice himself so that her dream gets fulfilled and she leads an independent and pain-free life!
12. John Abraham - New York:
Considered as John’s best performance, he shocked everyone during the interval by revealing that he is a terrorist and left all in tears with all the pains and torture he had been through while being suspected as a terrorist. And though it was the need of the story for him to die, his death was indeed an emotional one! No one wanted a loving family man and an adorable and caring friend like him to die because of being forced to become a terrorist!
13. Shahid Kapoor - Fida:
While the audience was gushing about the cute actor and his chemistry with Kareena, him getting betrayed and the sweet love story turning into a thriller came as a shocker. And then, watching this lover getting shot made every fan-girl cry out loud! Why Kareena Why?!!
14. Genelia D’souza Deshmukh - Force:
We loved her in ‘Jaane Tu..Ya Jaane Na’ and fell in love with her even more in ‘Force’ where she played the jovial and fun-loving but a matured girl! However, all we wanted by the end of the movie was John Abraham to kill Vidyut Jamwal’s character for killing Genelia mercilessly! That was indeed a heart-breaking scene…
15. Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor, Atul Kulkarni, Siddharth Narayan and R. Madhavan - Rang De Basanti:
Perhaps the most unexpected death in Bollywood. Not just one, but all the lead actors die; thankfully for a cause! While Madhavan’s sudden death shocked everyone, the climax made every one cry! Yes, there was not a single person the theatre who didn’t have tears in their eyes upon the death of all the actors! But those eyes were filled with pride too, since the young men die but unite the entire country to take an action against what’s wrong!
16. Abhishek Bachchan - Dus:
Neither was his role a funny one nor an adorable one. But it was Abhishek’s on-screen persona, and his character’s dedication to his job that left all shocked and in tears when he decided to sacrifice his life to save thousands of other lives!
17. Ranveer Singh - Lootera:
Oh yes.. Ranveer Singh can do a different kind of role too. And more than that, he can make us cry too! He proved this to us in ‘Lootera’ where his thief-in-love role. The movie and its characters were deep; perhaps that’s the reason why his death by the policemen moved all to tears!
18. Katrina Kaif – New York:
John wasn’t the only one whose death left us all with tears, but it was Katrina’s death that left us all wondering “Oh Lord! What was her fault? Why did she die?” If Katrina’s beautiful acting as a caring friend and a loving woman trying to bind her family together wasn’t enough director Kabir Khan made sure she gets all the sympathies along with John Abraham as the two die during the final few minutes of the wonderful movie!
19. Sushant Singh Rajput – Kai Po Che:
He dedicated his entire life to one passion- Cricket; and was perhaps a genius in the sport but never got the recognition he deserved! He was a true friend and the best mentor any one could get! While others were caught in the Hindi-Muslim fight, he didn’t care about who is what but cared about what is right! His death in the climax by his own friend (by mistake) left all with their jaws open, hoping for a miracle to happen!
20. Rajkummar Rao – Shahid:
Even though it was a biopic on the lawyer Shahid Azmi and his fate was known to all, it was Rajkummar Rao’s terrific and realistic acting that moved us all to tears upon his death on-screen! Yes, such was the impact of this actor as the lawyer who fights to serve justice to the innocent, that he even won a National Award for his performance! We all loved Shahid’s daring front to do his duty even if it means giving up his life!
And they lived happily ever after….hopefully in heaven! Meanwhile, we miss you too Jon Snow..
