Bollywood's Biopics: From 'Bhag Milkha Bhag' to 'The Dirty Picture'

National Award winning director Hansal Mehta recently confirmed that his next would be with the stunning and talented Kangana Ranaut. While he has confirmed that it would be a biopic, he rubbished off the rumours about the biopic being based on Bachendari Pal, the first Indian woman to make it to the summit of Mount Everest.

And not just this one, 2015 has a list of biopics lined up for a release. Be it a biopic on a famous murderer, a controversial sports player or a controversial actor, 2015 promises to be a year of good performances and charismatic story-telling.

So let us look at the the biopics that won our heart and which kept giving an ignition to the trend of biopics time and again:

1. Paan Singh Tomar:

irrfan khan

Hardly any one remembered the name of this athlete-turned-dacoit, who had made India proud several times, before director Tigmanshu Dhulia came up with this hard-hitting and raw biopic sans any commercial content. It was another feather on Irrfan Khan's cap who practically lived as Paan Singh Tomar in the movie.

2. Bhag Milkha Bhag:

vidya balan

It takes a lot of effort and some real talent to show the life of a sports athlete right from his childhood to one of his most memorable victories, making it nearly a three-hour movie but still keeping the plot intact and the audiences glued to their seats. The movie wouldn't have been what it is without director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and the multi-talented and outstanding Farhan Akhtar.

3. The Dirty Picture:

vidya balan

In what is termed as one of the finest and bold performances in the history of Bollywood, Vidya Balan played south-siren Silk Smitha with grace and hotness. The movie was an entertainer.

4. Rang Rasiya:

randeep hooda

The movie saw the light of the day almost after 4 years due to various delays. A biopic on the life of painter Raja Ravi Verma and what drove him to paint the pictures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

5. Shahid:

rajkummar rao

It's a rarity that a movie so raw, honest, without any single commercial content and made at a low budget found a big audience and went on to win several Nation Awards. If there's one man who made the movie worth watching, it is National Award Winner Rajkummar Rao who gave a career-defining performance and played lawyer Shahid Azmi with utmost honesty.

6. Gandhi, My Father:

akshaye khanna

Well, not every movie is about a hero. This movie was about the son of India's hero. A movie that showed the audience how troubled Mahatma Gandhi's personal life was! It comprises of brilliant art-work, direction and an exceptional performance by Akshaye Khanna.

7. Bose, The Forgotten Hero:

subhash Chandra bose

Another long but amazing biopic on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, his struggle for freedom and the foundation of Indian Army starring Sachin Khedekar in the title role.

8. Sardar:

paresh rawal

Now that he has given us so many memorable performances, it would be unfair to say “his best” but surely, one of Paresh Rawal's best performances where he played Sardar Vallabbhai Patel.

9. Mary Kom:

mary kom

Priyanka Chopra's acting was appreciated by all. The movie was a tribute to MC Mary Kom, five times World Boxing Champion from India. Overall though, the movie didn't do well enough.

10. The Legend Of Bhagat Singh:

ajay devgn

While many movies were made on this freedom fighter and his two aides Sukhdev and Rajguru, this one remains a favourite and most appreciated one. Ajay Devgn's performance as the legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh won him the National Award for Best Actor the second time.

11. Mangal Pandey:

aamir khan

Director Ketan Mehta seems to have an inclination for biopics. After 'Sardar' and before 'Rang Rasiya' he made a bioic on Mangal Pandey, an Indian soldier who revolted against the British. Aamir Khan's 4 year gap to get into the character and his exceptional transformation somehow got overshadowed by the poor performance of the movie.

12. Asoka:

shahrukh khan

Well well, biopics may go wrong too at times. Asoka was a biopic on the life of the Great Emperor Ashoka. The movie was a grand one but the love story and commercial infusions were said to have spoilt the fun. Shah Rukh's efforts were appreciated by one and all though.

13. Chak De! India:

shahrukh khan

Not exactly a biopic but a tribute to hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi, the movie was loosely based on Negi's life and how he was tagged as a traitor and made a comeback as the coach of India's Women's Hockey Team. Certainly one of the best performances by Shah Rukh Khan.

So let's gear up for this year's big biopics where we would see versatile actors like Kangana Ranaut, Emraan Hashmi, Randeep Hooda, Ranbir Kapoor, and many more portraying someone else! Also, do let us know which among these impressed you the most.
