‘Criminal’ is all about CIA Agent Ka Dimaag, and Criminal Ki Daring (brains of a CIA Agent and daring of a rough criminal- mixture of both in one person). Here’s what we have to say about this movie…
Star Cast: Kevin Costner, Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot and Gary Oldman.
Director: Ariel Vromen
Producer: Campbell-Grobman Films and Millennium Films
Slaps: Story, Screenplay and Direction
What’s New: Deadpool is married to Wonder Woman and his boss is Commissioner James Gordon (and there’s nothing new or more exciting than this throughout the film)!
Popcorn Refill: Interval
Plot: CIA Agent Bill Pope is tortured to death by Xavier Heimbahl, who wants the access to all the defence nuclear missiles, in order to launch them and spread anarchy. However, Pope has hidden Heimbahl’s hacker ‘The Dutchman’ at secret vicinity only he knew about. With both the CIA agents and Xavier’s men trying to find the hacker, the CIA comes up with a plan to graph Pope’s memories into another man’s brain; and their only hope for this experiment is the emotionally stunted and rough criminal Jericho.
Performances: This film belongs to Kevin Costner and he plays his part with utmost conviction. He is very convincing as the rough and tough emotionally stunted criminal, and will at the same time make you feel for him during the final few minutes of the movie.
Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot and Gary Oldman and good, as usual, but have very little to do.
Direction: Ariel Vromen could have done a lot with this interesting concept but ends up creating a not-so-impressive action-thriller, wasting the talent of some of the finest actors in a predictable story that could have been presented effectively.
The movie begins on a rather interesting note. But soon, hits the bottom and becomes a boring and dragged affair. The characterizations are poor. While Ryan Reynolds is reduced to a good-looking and suave CIA Agent, all that Gal Gadot is asked to do is cry. And maybe Kevin Costner’s ‘Criminal’ was sketched out as just a “rough-tough guy with no sentiments” who suddenly goes from being bad to all-good as the films nears towards its climax. Even the antagonist Xavier (played by Jordi Molla) fails to invoke any kind of fear or spark any sort of tension.
If you think that the movie on the topic of safety of the world and nuclear weapons issue and “CIA vs the Bad Anarchist Guys” will get a grand treatment and have many plot-lines to it, then you are in a for major disappointment!
Combo-On-Offer: Action + Thriller
Verdict: Despite a good performance by Kevin Costner, we give ‘Criminal’ TIGHT SLAPS for being a predictable and dragged movie that had an amazing concept in hand. It could have done wonders if the writers and the director would have not taken a lazy approach to showcase it!
