You remember those wonderful ads by Aamir Khan to promote soft drink Coca Cola, don’t you? You even remember how you fell for Deepika Padukone when she became the new face of the same soft drink along with Farhan Akhtar.
But do you know who the first Indian actor to endorse Coca Cola was? None other than Karisma Kapoor! Yes, that was the star-power of this actress during the 90’s, when she ruled the silver screen with her gorgeous looks, great acting skills, amazing dance steps and great chemistry with all her co-stars.
Even though Karisma is known for her versatile acting chops in movies like ‘Raja Hindustani’, ‘Andaz Apna Apna’, ‘Dil Toh Pagal Hai’, ‘Fiza’ and ‘Zubeida’, she is still remembered and loved for being in our mobile’s playlist. Yes, the actress has been a part of some of the most amazing songs which would make you get up and dance even today! Let us have a look at some of them!
Sarkai Lo Khatiya (Raja Babu):
It was only the third time when Karisma was paired with Govinda, that the audiences noticed the great and comfortable chemistry between the two! Even though this song received a lot of flak from the media and public alike for its vulgar choreography, it is considered a classic now!
Aa Aa Ee Oo Oo Ooo (Raja Babu):
And by the end of this song we knew we had a crush on Karisma Kapoor and her nakhras, had found a great comedian in Shakti Kapoor, and had found the trademark Govinda costume- white waist coat, topi and goggles!
Sona Kitna Sona Hai (Hero No.1):
Govinda and Karisma were hands-down the best couple of the 90s! And this song proves it yet again as they dance on a typical David Dhawan song. While Karisma rocks the chic look with grace, Govinda entertains the audience with his funny antiques.
Le Gayi (Dil Toh Pagal Hai):
It is not every day that apart from the lead actors in a romantic movie, even the supporting actor wins equal accolades and even the National Award for the Best Supporting Actress. But with an actress like Karisma on-board, nothing is impossible! The Yash Chopra romance begins with her making her way into the audience’s hearts as she dances on ‘Le Gayi’ charming everyone before introducing us to the other characters of the movie.
During her phase of trying out on different roles was her role in this movie, where she played a club dancer and is healing a wound before she meets Sunil Shetty.
Main Toh Raste Se Jaa Raha Tha (Coolie No.1):
We really do not blame Govinda for doing 10 movies with the same actress. In fact, going by how cute and innocent she looks in the song…we are kinda getting jealous of him!
Baby Baby (Khuddar):
That song which made every boy in the crowd go crazy about her. Right from her glamorous looks to the seductive and sensuous moves, the song became an instant rage. Also, the original lyrics of the song were “Sexy Sexy Mujhe Log Bole” which was changed to “Baby Baby Mujhe Log Bole”, thanks to the Censor Board.
And we just couldn’t end the list without this song! The song you will still hear in Mumbai locals, the one which is still heard by depressed aashiqs all over India. ‘Pardesi Pardesi’ from that movie due to which she earned her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress, and also indulged in her first on-screen lip-lock which created a huge buzz around the movie and is still considered as one of the best one in Indian Cinema!
We don’t see much of the star these days, even though Karisma did try making a comeback in 2012 with ‘Dangerous Ishq’ which was a complete washout! But let’s not forget the diva ruled during her days and made an identity for herself instead of being known as the ‘Kapoor girl’.
Her journey from being the normal-looking girl in the industry to the gorgeous diva who ruled millions of hearts has indeed been an inspiring one! No one has been able to match that cool and bindaas attitude she had on-screen! Here’s wishing her a very Happy Birthday!
