Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra - from Aks to Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra - from Aks to Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

He started his career selling Eureka Forbes’ vacuum cleaner to people, and today the same people go and watch his films which give us an insight into the country’s politics and what goes in the aam junta’s mind!

A good director in true sense, Mehra has never stuck to one particular genre; he has a different style of story-telling which makes everyone glued to their seats till the end! Let us have a look at the movies directed by him and why they are all great ones, irrespective of their fate at the box office.

1. Aks:

aks movie

While every other director prefers starting their career with a genre that would be widely accepted and watched by all, Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra decided to go the supernatural way. His ‘Aks’ was dark, bold and scary. With this film, he brought two of the best actors of the industry Amitabh Bachchan and Manoj Bajpayee together!

2. Rang De Basanti:

rang de basanti movie

The movie that made the director a well-known name in the industry. Many movies had been made on Shaheed Bhagat Singh and his friends who sacrificed their life for India’s freedom from the British Raj. But it was Mehra who took it a completely new level by comparing their thoughts with that of today’s generation, and managed to win all the accolades and awards! ‘Rang De Basanti’ in true words, is a masterpiece, and the master is none other than Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra.

3. Delhi-6:

delhi 6 movie

The movie bombed at the box-office, but was another example of Mehra’’s excellent direction skills as he showed the true side of the lanes of Delhi’s Chandni Chowk. Every actor’s characterization, their thought, their behavior and their attire was exact and gave Delhi’s feel! However, the movie lost its audience due to its slow and not-so-interesting story line. But it showed that Mehra knows how to re-create the ambiance of a place on-screen.

4. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag:

bhaag milkha bhaag movie

If ‘Inception’ was a dream within a dream, ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ was a story within a story; and still the director managed to keep the movie on-track without confusing the audiences even for a second. Taking an autobiography and converting it into an inspiring movie which was 3-hours-long yet not minus a dull moment takes a lot of hard work and great visionary director! And guess who succeeded at making everyone love this movie and who is responsible for showing us a totally different acting side of Farhan Akhtar? None other than Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra!

His next is ‘Mirziya’ which marks the debut of Anil Kapoor’s son Harshwardhan Kapoor opposite model Saiyami Kher.

Here’s wishing the visionary director a very Happy Birthday!
