I Movie Review: Vikram outshines in this weak scripted love saga!

Movie: 'I' The Movie

Star cast: Vikram, Amy Jackson, Upen Patel, Suresh Gopi, Ramkumar, Santhanam, Ojas M. Rajani

Director: Shankar

Producer: V. Ravichandran

Claps for: Vikram's performance, locations

Slaps for: Length of the film, Upen Patel

Popcorn Refill: During the interval

Story: Vikram plays a bodybuilder 'Lingesan' who idolizes Arnold Schwarzenegger and supermodel Diya played by Amy Jackson. The posters of Arnold decorate the walls of his lower middle class home and his gym (which is named after Arnold), there's a box full of women products endorsed by Diya in his bedroom. In the refreshing initial moments, Shankar helps us understand that Lingesan has extreme liking for Diya but doesn't love her yet because of their social and cultural divide. The story takes a detour when Lingesan turns overnight into model Lee, soon becoming a sensation in the glamorous world of advertising and earning the wrath of a few. The twist in this tale takes place when Lingesan rejects an ad from Ramkumar, a wealthy businessman, and the advances of Ojas M Rajani, who plays a transgender stylist. It is from here that Shankar's 'I' ends up becoming a big budget old-fashioned revenge drama.

Performances: Vikram plays three different roles - the body builder, the model and the hunchbacked character. While he is perfect in the first two roles, he is just a class apart as the hunchbacked man. He excels in his third character. Amy Jackson surprisingly gives us a decent performance and is cute as the lovable model in the big bad ad world. Suresh Gopi and celebrity stylist Ojas M. Rajani are fine in their roles. Upen Patel, however, seems a slight misfit.

Direction: Since Shankar returns after a gap of three years, there were high expectations from 'I', especially since the movie teased us with Vikram and his hunchbacked avatar. However, though Vikram's performance is commendable, Shankar falls short with his script. The three hour film fails to impress largely, though it is good in bits. In fact, the first half could have been reduced by almost 20 minutes, which kind of makes the film look dragged. 'I' after the interval still makes for a good watch.

Combo on offer: Action + Romance + Revenge Drama

Final Verdict: Though the film's script is weak, we give the film claps for Vikram's performance
