Story: The Gladers have now been rescued from the Maze and are taken to a facility run by Mr. Janson; who promises to keep them and hundreds of others like them, from other mazes, safe from W.C.K.D and the virus from solar flare. However, soon Thomas finds out that Janson too works for Ava, W.C.K.D’s leader, and that they still haven’t got out of the trap. However, far away in the mountains is an army called the Red Arm,that can protect them and keep them away from being experimented upon.
What follows next is the journey of Thomas and his friends, along with a few new ones, to get to the Red Arm, battling various dangerous obstacles.
Performances: While ‘The Maze Runner’ gave the young actors ample of time to show their acting skills and how they survive struggle and live together as a unit inside the maze, the fight in this movie is to run away from W.C.K.S and the focus is more on the story than their acting prowess.
All the actors have done a great job. Be it Dylan O’Brien, who acts as the main leader and inspires all to move forward, or his friends played by Thomas-Brodie Sangster, Ki Hong Lee and Kaya Scodelario.
Amongst the new ones who join the cast, it is definitely Rosa Salazar, Jacob Lofland and Giancarlo Esposito who impress and leave a mark.
And then, there is Aidan Gillen who takes the center-stage this time as the main antagonist and plays with his eyes, expressions and voice! The actor has always been a treat to watch with his multiple- layered characters.
Direction: While his ‘The Maze Runner’ revolved inside the maze trials and the lives of the people and their daily struggle to get out, this one is a completely different and a grand one. It has many more characters, is surely much more adventurous and covers a lot more places. Despite all the new inclusions in the movie, Wes Ball manages to keep the soul of the movie intact with the first one, keeps the characters the way they were back in the first film and deliver another edge-of-the-seat drama!
The story is obviously a very predictable and clichéd one but it is the intriguing screenplay and crisp editing along with action-packed scenes that make this film worth the watch! There is not a single dull scene.
Certain scenes have been handled in a different way from how they have been handled over the years in various movies, without hampering with the emotions behind that scene, and perhaps that’s where Ball wins in showing that he is a different and visionary director!
Combo-On-Offer: Suspense + Action + Drama
Verdict: Even though the film is nothing like ‘The Maze Runner’, it is different and fast-paced; and with brilliant action scenes and VFX, it will keep you glued to your seats. Hence, we give it THUNDEROUS CLAPS.
