Born to a school headmaster and part-time teacher in Bangalore, Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone or as we know him, Guru Dutt, initially started as a choreographer for Prabhat Film Company but with growing friendship with actor Dev Anand, he soon turned into a director, actor and even a producer.
In a career spanning over 2 decades, the director has given some of the best classics, some were hits and some got critical appreciation years after it bombed at the box-office. But the director’s love for tragedy genre was seen in nearly all of his movies. It was said that the actor-director himself lived a very tragic himself due to a bad childhood and an unhappy married life later, along with a failed relationship with actress Waheeda Rehman. His unhappiness was visible in many of his movies and characterizations of his movie’s characters.
Let us have a look at some of his best works:
Considered as of Guru Dutt’s best works, the movie spoke volumes about the hypocritical nature of people in the society and how they change their opinions and behavior in order to make personal profits. Dutt’s on-screen pairing with Waheeda Rehman was loved by all. And who can forget the melodious Sar Jo Tera Chakraaye song, filmed on Johnny Walker!
2. Kagaz Ke Phool:
The movie bombed at the box-office upon its release, but has achieved a cult status over the years. The movie was about a big director who falls in love with his actress, while going through a troubled marriage phase and how that relationship ends on a sad note with the director becoming a lonely, sad and forgotten man in the film-industry. They say this story was an autobiography of Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman’s love story.
Dev Anand and Guru Dutt were best friends, and it was due to this friendship that Guru Dutt got his first opportunity to direct a film under Dev Anand’s production house- ‘Baazi’.
The movie was a big hit and is known for introducing two new technical developments in film-making:
a. The Guru Dutt Shot
b. Usage of songs to narrate the story further
4. Mr. & Mrs. ’55:
A movie different from his other flicks. ‘Mr. & Mrs. ‘55’ was a romantic comedy where the beautiful Madhubala played Dutt’s love interest.
5. Chaudhvin Ka Chand:
A love triangle set in Lucknow, starred all of Guru Dutt’s favorites Waheeda Rehman, his best friend Rehman and the common comic-aide in all his movies- Johnny Walker. The Mohammed Rafi song Chaudhvin Ka Chand is still sung by all.
It’s been years since the legendary director-actor passed away. We miss him, and the kind of deep and tragic movies he made!
