Claps For: Performances, Music, Production values
Slaps For: Wafer-thin plot
What's New: A larger-than-life story with dreamy characters.
Popcorn Refill: Interval
Story: The film starts with an animated story in Naseeruddin Shah's voice-over where he introduces us to Bipin Arora (Pankaj Kapur) and his adopted daughter Alia (Alia Bhatt). But like any other fairy tale, Bipin's mother (Sushma Seth) and his wife constantly taunt her for being 'adopted'. But our girl is a wild child with a strange problem- she is insomniac and her father only wishes that she gets a good night sleep one day (No we ain't kidding here). Alia is a darling sister to Isha (Sanah Kapoor) who is all set to get hitched to Robin, a dude with eight-and-half pack abs (Vikas Verma). He belongs to the rich Fundwani family helmed by the gold-loving Harry Fundwani played by Sanjay Kapoor (With all his bling and glitz he might even put Bappi Lahiri to shame but PS he is a Sindhi, mind you!). Enter a young dashing wedding planner Jagjinder Joginder aka JJ (Shahid Kapoor). Sparks flow between him and Alia. To complicate things further, both, the Aroras and the Fundwanis have a secret to hide from each other.
Performances: Shahid Kapoor wins you over with his charming smile. He looks handsome and his endearing antics will make you fall for him..like totally! His chemistry with Alia is oh-so-cute! Alia Bhatt as the dreamy eyed girl is totally adorable. Be it her candy-floss romance with Shahid or her daddy dearest moments with Pankaj Kapur she is an absolute delight to watch. Pankaj Kapur makes the film truly 'Shaandaar' and leaves you with a smile. Sanah Kapur makes a confident debut with this film. Sanjay Kapoor leaves you in splits with his humorous lines. Watch out for Sushma Seth pulling off a Cruella kind of role with delicious wickedness
Direction: Mind you this film is no 'Queen'! You need to constantly remind yourself of this line while you are watching this flick or else you will be terribly disappointed. Vikas Bahl this time is in a mood to treat us with a sweet tale but alas! this one has so much sugar that at one point of time, I feared that I might leave the cinema hall with diabetes! The plot oh..wait what is that? For me, I could only see the characters but the story was no where in sight. ( Post the film I thought there might be an announcement saying, "You have just been to Disney World). Having said that I must say that 'Shaandaar' has some genuinely brilliant moments but they don't last long. However Vikas deserves a pat on his back for addressing several issues like weight loss, self esteem issues that constantly plagues today's youngsters. Also, the film has some breath-taking cinematography and foot-tapping music by Amit Trivedi.
Combo-on-offer: A Big Fat Wedding+ Romance+Humour
Verdict: We give 'Shaandaar Claps for Shahid Kapoor-Pankaj Kapur's cute 'nok-jhok' that makes it an interesting watch!
