Sunny Leone's last film 'Kuch Kuch Locha Hai' might not have worked wonders at the box office but the actress is all excited for the release of her upcoming sex comedy 'Mastizaade' which is slated to hit the silver screens this Friday.
As the release date of the film inches closer, Sunny in a brief chat talks about her role, on being typecast, her views on motherhood and her upcoming films. Excerpts from the conversation.
How was your experience doing 'Mastizaade'?
Shooting for this film was a lot of fun because it's a comedy. It was all about having fun and joking all day long. I mean it was the funniest sets I have ever been around.
Why made you take up this project?
When Rongita and Milap met Daniel my husband, Milap gave few scenes and little bit of narration of the movie. And this is the only time when it's happened that he calls me (Daniel) and tells me, "We are coming upstairs.. you have to hear this story and this is the 1st time Daniel is so excited about the story." So he came upstairs, Milap told me the first half of the movie and it was so funny and when I think of these types of movies I don’t think…Oh! You know! Log kya sochenge? Like, Oh my god! What are people going to think, you can do this. All these things don’t go through my mind because I have raised watching these types of movies like 'American Pie, 'Meet the Millers'. It’s like so crazy, this movie is a walk in the park compared to those movies. I think of the story, I think of the movie and you know this was right after 'Ragini' so we thought that it was so nice to make comedy. We just wanted to have fun and have a good time and do a film which is just funny. So, that’s how the movie came about.
You are playing double role in the film, so which character you liked the most- Lily or Laila?
I like Lily more because she is closer to my own personality than Laila is. Laila has been created for the world and that’s how people see me. They see me as Laila and that's the reason when Milap was telling me the story I was like okay I kind of like Lily more than Laila and he came up with the idea we are going to make the double role instead of just Laila, and for me, it worked because it’s not just one. So people will get to see who they want to see and they are also seeing other person that is me too. To see me play two roles that is so different since both the characters are opposite to each other. So, it will be interesting to see who likes who.
How difficult was it transforming from Lily to Laila?
It was easy for me to become Lily. Because she is goofy, crazy and funny. She makes faces and she is completely opposite to her sister who is always sexy, beautiful and provocative. I found her (Laila) more difficult.
Which was the craziest moment in the film?
I can tell you of my favorite scene which is when Laila has a nightmare and when she wakes up she says, “Mujhe woh karna hoga jo maine aj tak kiya nahi” and the next morning she sees herself covered from top to bottom in a saree. She is doing puja. They made the remake of 'Baby Doll' for this scene. So, it’s the same tone but they changed the words instead. That’s my favorite scene and I am dying to people's reaction to this.
Do you fear being typecast?
There is nothing I can do about it. I can’t do anything about how I look or being sexy. So if people want to typecast me. It’s okay. It does not bother me as much as it bothers someone else. My job is to do my job and the next two movies are different. They are not in the same zone of this movie. I don’t know if I can make one of these movies unless it will be on the scale of which we made here. The feel, the love, the whole look of the movie is so rich. It looks grand. The next two movies are not like that. Everybody keeps asking me when you are going to do serious movies with serious actors? To me this is just as serious and just as hard as doing something else. But to tell people it’s not like the same. So, we go to find out whether people like that. People like me seeing this way or another way.
Would you take up an action or a thriller film?
Of course, I love action. Anybody who has worked with me knows I like action. I keep jumping. I am very clumsy. But, I think as long as something is not broken, put a band aid on it and keep moving. So, yes if I get a chance to do action and thriller films, I would do it. I like all types of movies. But I think my favourite is probably comedy.
You said you like movies, so do we see you directing one in the near future?
I don’t think so. I think to be a good director you have to do so many things. You would be a horrible director unless you can actually visualize and see and understand things or maybe get training. It’s rare.. it’s a God given gift that you know how to direct. I don’t think that’s me. I think I would rather be more of producer and sit behind the screen and let the right people and talented people do their job. Because I would not want to spoil anything of ego trouble.
So do we see you producing a film?
I think producers make more money. So, I would rather be a producer than a director.
Was it tiring for you to switch from one character to the other every time?
I think because of Rongita and Milap it wasn't. I loved working on the sets so much that I did not mind. I loved the idea of becoming something you are not or becoming something totally different. That's the fun about making movies. I was like; I don’t want to be this, I want to be something else. Somebody that is made up in somebody else's mind; fictional character that comes to mind and PNC and Milan and all AD team made sure that if I am Laila in the morning they used to finish everything of Laila in the morning. Then in post they used to finish everything of Lily. So, there was nothing going back and forth. That was only one day that they asked me to switch back and woh scene movie main nahi hai. What you cut it out? You made me to change. (laughs). It was upsetting but it was fine.
Would you like to do a biopic?
I am not sure. I haven’t been offered you know to be somebody. You know the stories of these girls coming in a industry and all the bad things and then they make movies that’s not interesting to me at all and I get lot of those scripts all the time. Just because it’s seen so many times you know it’s for nothing and then you became actors and then you became larger than life and then you fall on the floor or you committed suicide. It’s the same story over and over. So I must take something different that catches my eyes. It needs to be different. Nothing as such has come to me till now.
Just before few days there were reports which said that you would like to take a step ahead into motherhood. So would you play a mother on-screen?
Sure, why not? I actually play a mother in one of the movies that I am making so that’s interesting question. I love children; However I don’t think that I’ll be getting pregnant any time soon. My comment was taken out of context and turned into completely different. This moment, there is so much going on that it would be not wise to get pregnant.
How was it playing a mother?
It was fun. I love children. It’s definitely something I would love to have in future. I had just thrown a house party recently and there were tons of kids in my house. Banging, running into things, pulling things out and running around like maniac so I mean they all were two years old, they were running around my house whole night long. So, I like children. I feel happy around them.
If a sequel of 'Mastizaade' is announced would you like to be a part of it?
Of course I don’t even have to think about it. I think that this movie is so funny and the two sisters are also very funny. Of course I’ll make sure in the next film I want to see few different things from the two sisters.
What is happening with 'Tina and Lolo' and 'One Night Stand'?
'Tina and Lolo'.. I am not sure about it. I am really busy so I am not sure and 'One Night Stand' will probably be the movie which releases after this.
