Surveen Chawla: 'PK' and 'Ugly' Don't Stand As Competition!

She is bold, sassy and doesn't mince her words. We are talking about Surveen Chawla, whose debut film 'Hate Story 2' was a box-office success, and her next film 'Ugly' has opened to rave reviews. In a quick chat, Surveen talks about her role in 'Ugly', working with Ronit Roy again after television and more. Read on…

What is your state of mind now that 'Ugly' has finally released?

I am very excited also because finally the film has released. I wrapped up 'Ugly' even before I began shooting for 'Hate Story 2'. But I am glad that finally it is out and I can't wait for it to hit the big screen. I am more excited because it has been appreciated all across.

Tell us about your character in 'Ugly'…

What I play in the film is a C grade filthy item girl. It was very difficult for me to get out of my comfort zone. She is very crass, cheap, greedy, selfish, opportunistic and definitely not a good friend. Basically, Anurag and I had met for some other project even before he began scripting for 'Ugly'. I was really keen to work with him. But that didn't work out and he said he has another script for me. It's an ensemble and every character is extremely important. I asked him not to justify because I was dying to work with him. As a startup, to work with Anurag in my debut film, it was an incredible experience.

How was your experience of working with Anurag Kashyap?

Anurag Kashyap didn't tell us what we were doing. He didn't want us to do any sort of homework. He just wanted us to come to the sets raw and fresh. He is the only person who could have pulled off a script like this. He didn't want me to prepare for the role. The only preparation Anurag wanted me to do is go back home, sleep, chill and come back the next day. He didn't want me to dwell into the character. As actors we all went with clean slates and Anurag wrote on those slates.

Were you gung ho about your character?

I was absolutely gung ho about the character and I was pushing the envelope further. I was doing something really crass. My item song was sick, like really sick. That was my inhibition. When in Bollywood we relate to item girls as glamorous divas. But my name is Rakhi Malhotra (laughs) and I had to be just hopelessly sick. I have never played a character like this, to step down and play this down market, cheap and ghatiya kisam ki aurat. But then again, in Anurag's films one can show crassest of things with ease. He can get away with murder as well because he has created that niche for himself.

Did you watch any other C grade films to get a feel of your character?

No I didn't have to watch such films to get a feel of my character. We have quite a few crass people in the industry. I have been there when news has been made and I have been around when slaps have been given etc.

Did the delay in the film's release benefit you since your debut film 'Hate Story 2' succeeded at the box office?

Honestly, I thought about it for a while when 'Ugly' got stuck in the no smoking statutory warning issue. I was always worried that my first film wasn't releasing. Most of us were in constant touch with Anurag as to what is happening. When the promo came out in 2013 we were excited. Then this fiasco happened, and it was sudden. It was a big blow for all of us. I finished 'Hate Story 2' and then I again thought about what's the scene with 'Ugly'. Then I realized, I should just let it go and I decided to not think about it. I wasn't disappointed and what turned out was great for me. In life sometimes, you just need to move away from what you have planned. Keeping in mind the success of that film, I think this is the right time for my fans to see me in this role.

You have worked with Ronit Roy in Kasauti Zindagi Ki and now again in 'Ugly'. How was your experience?

I don't really have a scene with Ronit in the movie. You will see me in a very shocked sweet role in the film. But whenever we crossed each other's paths on the sets, we would just meet and chill. Go to the vanity vans and just chit chat, talk television days and have fun. I am very fond of him as an actor. He is someone who has really grown, right from 'Udaan' to now.

Do you think this is the right time for release of 'Ugly' since Aamir's 'PK' has released just a week earlier?

You know what I don't think 'PK' and 'Ugly' stand as a competition to each other in any single way. I mean we are talking about Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani and you don't need to say a third name. I myself haven't seen the film but what I am hearing, it is an outstanding film. When I spoke to Anurag, he told me that our film is a word of mouth film. With 'PK' you have very high expectations but there is no competition.
