There are three films with same percentage of Claps on our website, which is a whopping 97 percent! The Ali Bhatt-Randeep Hooda starrer directed by Imtiaz Ali was praised for its acting, cinematography and music in particular. A different movie, which dared to have a mainstream release with a not-so-mainstream concept! The end product was a good film which put tremendous spotlight on Alia and Randeep for their terrific roles.
The Akshay Kumar-Sonakshi Sinha starrer is the second film with 97 percent Claps on our list. The A.R. Murgadoss-directed action film is another South Indian remake which went on to cross the 100 crore mark at the domestic box office. A bit of a surprise, it is without a doubt that Akshay Kumar's charm worked among the public in general.
Rani Mukerji made a stunning return as a Crime Branch officer who dares to take on the highly organized and powerful child trafficking and prostitution mafia in India. Produced by beau Aditya Chopra's Yashraj Films, it marked an entry into the world of gritty and realistic cinema for both YRF and director Pradeep Sarkar. The movie received critical acclaim too, with Rani Mukerji being singled out.
Debutant director Vikas Bahl won hearts with the story of a simple, middle-class Delhi girl who dares to go on her honeymoon alone after being stood up at the altar by her fiancé. Kangana Ranaut gave an enduring performance in a role which seemed tailor-made for her. Unfortunately, it had a small release and strong word-of-mouth almost propelled it to the 100 crore mark.
Rajkumar Hirani returned to the big screen after a long hiatus, combining with Aamir Khan. The result? The highest grossing hindi movie of all time which shattered records and set a new benchmark for others to follow. This year-end blockbuster was peppered with controversies right from the day its first poster was launched! There was no stopping the Aamir Khan-Raju Hirani-Vidhu Vinod Chopra juggernaut this time too.
6) Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania
Another surprise! There are quite a few in our list of movies for Top Claps of 2014! This Varun Dhawan-Alia Bhatt starrer was touted as the new-age 'DDLJ' and young audiences took a liking to this rom-com.
7) 2 States
Alia Bhatt's third release of the year co-starring Arjun Kapoor and a wonderful supporting cast managed decent numbers at the box office. The story of a Tamil girl marrying a Punjabi boy found plenty of takers and received much praise.
Akshay Kumar's terrific fan-following made sure that another of his movie made it to the Top Claps list. The only outright comedy in this year's list, many took a liking to this slapstick fare even though it was panned by critics.
9) Ek Villain
Mohit Suri's violent drama crossed the 100 crore mark thanks to the superb performances of Sidharth Malhotra and in particular, Ritesh Deshmukh. The music was a hit as we now come to expect from the stables of Vishesh Films.
10) Dedh Ishqiya
The sequel to 'Ishqiya' failed to get the masses going for it and the youth seemed to take a liking to 'Yaariyan'. Those who watched, appreciated it and Madhuri Dixit was hailed for her return to the silver screen. The acting and dialogues stood out making sure that it received a good number of Claps.
11) Bhoothnath Returns
Projected as cinema mainly for children, it had a much more serious undertone with the story veering towards corruption, people's rights, democracy etc. It did fairly well at the box office with Amitabh Bachchan's only release of 2014 bringing people to the cinemas with its relevance increased due to elections also being held at around the same time.
Anurag Kashyap's much delayed film had some sterling performances from its cast in this dark, edgy thriller. Though it didn't light up the box office charts, the discerning movie-goer took a liking to this one.
Vishal Bharadwaj 's third Shakespearan adaptation was serious cinema which marked Shahid Kapoor's best performance till date. Tabu and Kay Kay Menon stood out among the supporting cast in a movie which polarized opinions and stoked discussions. Did fairly well considering the fact it was up against 'Bang Bang' which had a massive release. This gutsy film had takers and was appreciated for its content.
A big surprise in the list! The college-going youth in particular took a liking to this rom-com by debutant director Divya Kumar Khosla. The music was a hit which helped in drawing the crowds and did pretty well at the box office compared to others.
15) Bang Bang
A massive release with a humungous budget, this remake of the Hollywood film 'Knight And Day' starring Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif crossed the 150 crore-mark at the box office. The critics though, didn't take much liking to this flick.
