What happened before the 'Ice Bucket Challenge?

It's raining buckets and celebs are not far behind in taking up this challenge to support a social cause. The ice bucket challenge that aims at promoting awareness about a lesser know disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has a number of celebrities dumping buckets of ice-cold water on themselves while capturing the action on video. Our very own Akshay Kumar was seen in a video having buckets of water dumped on him. As much as we love the fact that this initiative has become like a trend that has influenced some of the biggest celebs, we should not forget some great social causes celebs have taken up in the past. Let's take a look at commendable efforts put in by celebs to make this world a better place.

Salman Khan- Being Human

#

Salman Khan has a generous heart and truly put in a lot of effort for the underprivileged children. His brand 'Being Human' contributes all its proceeds towards the well being of those who need a little care. He has actively involved major celebs from B-town to endorse 'Being Human' and has succeeded in almost turning it into a trend.

Priyanka Chopra- Supporting the girl child

#

Though Priyanka Chopra may not have a trademark brand like Salman Khan, she has actively been a part of many events to support the girl child. In a country where gender bias still creates problems, former Miss World lived up to her promises made at the pageant as she was seen at NGO's on several occasions, be it International Girl Child Day or simply promoting the well being of under privileged children.

Aamir Khan- Satyamev Jayate

#

Aamir Khan has a different way of contributing towards social issues. He was successful in connecting with the masses as he threw light upon many issues that needed immediate attention. With many tear jerking moments, this show is a great example of Aamir's contribution towards social causes.

Aishwarya Rai- Multiple social causes

In the year 2004, the gorgeous actress started the 'Aishwarya Rai Foundation' to generate charity for those in need. She is also a strong supporter of PETA. Recently the actress was chosen as the goodwill ambassador of 'Smile Train' a campaign that aims towards giving free treatment for children with a cleft lip.
