Zayed Khan: Stardom came quickly ever since 'Main Hoon Na' happened!

Zayed Khan, who has charmed us with films like 'Main Hoon Na', 'Dus', 'Chura Liya Hai Tumne', has been away from the silver screen for quite some time now. But the actor has no qualms about it. In fact, he was busy prepping up for something special. And now Zayed will be back on-screen with 'Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene' which releases this week. In a quick chat, Khan talks about his film, his future plans and more. Read on…

Firstly, 'Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene' has happened after a long gap. What was the reason for the delay?

Two things happened - one was that I had to put a break on things. Things were going out of control. I didn't know what I was doing. I was just doing big banner films and following their agenda than what I wanted to do. Truth be told, ever since 'Main Hoon Na' happened, stardom just came so quickly that everybody wanted to cash in on it. And I was still discovering myself along the way. I wanted to do quirky kinds of characters. I immediately did 'Vaada', which was a psychotic kind of a role and that failed. Hence I thought what am I doing? I did multi-starrers, big banners which looked good on script but they didn't work. So I had to put a break on that and had to re-think. Secondly, I am working on something big. It is my father's project.

What does 'Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene' mean?

It has a strange meaning. Actually I wasn't familiar with this slang. Apparently it is a North Indian slang. I was surprised to know people use it often. It basically means you don't have to always do right things. Sometimes you can be selfish. It can be put in many connotations. In our film, it is about a common man who has common aspirations. He doesn't want the World but he wants to work hard, earn money the right way. They don't believe in shortcut. On the other hand, his roommate believes in shortcut. The way it is used in this connotation is that he gets caught up when he realizes that there is Rs. 100 crores in bank account, which is not his money. Being the kind of person he is, that scares him. He is perturbed by it and sooner or later he realizes that he is being trapped into it.

What attracted you to this film?

The well written script and the quirky title pulled me to this script. As actors we have a habit of meddling with the script, but this one came across to me as truthful, witty, honest, amazing and entertaining that I just could not say no to this film. Most of my life, I have done big banner films, so when this came, my heart just said this is something I should do.

What was challenging while doing 'Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene'?

After a long time I am doing character which is not even 1% of Zayed Khan and that was quite challenging.

Your films have always had great music. Do you have any inputs in it?

I think it is my energy but I have to say that my films have had great music. I have been very lucky with music. Sometimes whenever we sit down to make music we never say that we have to make a hit song. That pressure should not be there. Gone are the days where only one or two music directors composing for a film. We also have a mixture of few.

You have often played naughty characters on-screen. Any particular reason for that?

Generally, what happens is that people naturally like to see the naughtiness in their actors. People get bored to see good boys on-screen. If you see most of the characters, they have a bad first half where they are completely the rockstar kind of character and they don't give a damn kind of feeling and then then in the second half there is a sudden realization that their character goes through. But this is how people evolve in real life too. Sometimes it is fun being naughty, pulling someone's leg and joking. That is the reason I chose roles like that. People get attracted to a character when they see flaws. We cannot show a perfect character because that is not reality.

How was your experience of shooting with your co-star Tina?

Tina is a very sweet girl, very professional and punctual. I even pulled a prank on her. But all in all it was great fun to work with her. She is very reserved and I find it very sexy. I find that attractive in a woman.

Many films are being remade now days. Would you like to revive any of your father Sanjay Khan's films?

I will be frank to you guys. I and my brother Fardeen have been talking about reviving a lot of his and my father's films which are very contemporary right now like 'Dharmatma', 'Kurbaan', 'Apradh' etc. Some stories have to be told to the new generation in a new way. These story lines were great and should be told again. There are lots of talks and I would love to revive some of those films. I would love to work with Vishal Bharadwaj and Sanjay Gupta who have a gritty way of doing films. They can be apt to revive such films.
