life and career
Shekhar started his career as an actor way back in 1975 and even dabbled with few popular TV shows before turning into a director with the family drama 'Masoom' which followed the story of a young illegitimate boy who struggles to find acceptance from his stepmother. His next was Anil Kapoor- Sridevi's 'Mr India' which is still loved by all even today and which gave us the iconic villain 'Mogambo'. Shekhar then directed the critically acclaimed 'Bandit Queen' wherein he even had a cameo act. His historical biopics on Queen Elizabeth- 'Elizabeth' (1998) and 'The Golden Age' (2007) won the BAFTA Award for Best Film, and two Academy Awards. He has been the recipient of the Indian National Film Award, the BAFTA Award, the National Board of Review Award, and three Filmfare Awards. In 2010, he served as one of the Jury Members (International Competition) at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival.
