Long before Shoojit Sircar won hearts with ‘Vicky Donor’ and critical acclaim for his ‘Madras Café’, the director made a film which failed to perform well at the box office but is still loved by all- the Jimmy Sheirgill starrer ‘Yahaan’ which also marked the debut of Minissha Lamba!
The end of ‘Yahaan’ was a complete delight as we saw the two lovebirds, Aman and Adaa, conquer it all and live happily ever after. But did you know, the original climax of the film was supposed to be a tragic one?
In a recent Mumbai Mirror article, Sircar stated, “If I could, I would change the end. In the first draft, Aman is killed in the final assault in the mosque and Adaa comes out alone, with the little Hindu Kashmiri girl her family had adopted. I don’t know why I went for a happy ending.”
He also revealed that he had taken the inspiration for the movie from a newspaper article about a Hindu jawan posted on curfew duty in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk.
We wonder how different Aman and Adaa’s story would have been had it never met its happy ending…
