TV series Review: 'Jane the Virgin' is an engrossing drama that keeps you hooked!

The critically acclaimed TV series 'Jane The Virgin' is all set to debut on the Indian television. The series is a loose adaptation of the Venezuelan telenovela series created by Perla Farias, originally known as Juana La Virgen.

Gina Rodriguez bagged the award for the Best Actress in a Television series – Musical or Comedy, at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards, while the show was nominated for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and was also nominated for the Critics’ Choice Award. The series has won the People’s choice award for the Favorite new TV comedy.

We got a chance to catch a preview of the show. Here's what we have to say about it.

Star Cast: Gina Rodriguez, Andrea Navedo, Yael Grobglas, Justin Baldoni, Ivonne Coll and Jaime Camil

Creator: Jennie Snyder Urman

Claps For: Gina Rodriguez, Humour element

Slaps For: Lack of novelty

Popcorn Refill: Ad break

Story: Set in the Alpha-World city of Miami, located on the Atlantic coast of beautiful South-eastern Florida, the series details the surprising and unforeseen events that take place in the life of Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez), whose family tradition and a vow to save her virginity until her marriage to a detective boyfriend Michael (Brett Dier) are shattered when the doctor mistakenly inseminates her artificially during a check-up. To make matters worse, the biological donor is a married man, a former playboy and cancer survivor Rafael (Justin Baldoni) who is not only the new owner of the hotel where Jane works, but was also her former teenage crush.

Performance: Gina Rodriguez as Jane Villanueva is quite impressive right from the first episode. Brett Dier and Justin Baldoni are good in their parts. We look forward to see various shades in their character as the story unfolds.

Content: The storyline is not new but it was the presentation that caught our eyes. The content coupled with interesting characters strike a chord with the Indian audience and make you look forward to the next episode.

Combo-on-Offer: Humour + Drama

Verdict: We give the show Claps for the engrossing content that has been immaculately adapted for the Indian viewers and the humour that it finds in a tiny beating heart.

'Jane The Virgin' will air from 5th August on Romedy Now, every Monday-Friday at 7 pm.
