Very disappointed with this effort. Dunkirk was a pivotal point during WWII and had it had failed then who knows. The central characters lacked any sense of the fight, the beach sequences were awful, obviously filmed on a 21st century beach, with all buildings on the sea front and the inner town undamaged, not showing any of the ravishes of war. The backward forward momentum is confusing, the attention to detail very poor ie, near the end of the movie, where the troops board a train, the carriage shown is a modern central isled carriage displaying the current blue check upholstery on the seats. the destroyer shown, or whatever it was meant to be, was under armed, WWII destroyers were fitted with three turrets each of two 6 - 8 inch guns, this one only had one in each, and little or no anti aircraft guns, and failed to engage the attacking aircraft. The anti aircraft guns on the beach and in the town also failed to engage the enemy. All in all, if you are looking for a rip roaring action packed movie on the evacuation of Dunkirk, THIS IS NOT IT. Disappointing.
Dunkirk opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.
